chi_393The great thing about the American success story is how creative we have become in achieving it. It’s not so much that we reinvent ourselves, it’s more that we invent new ways to use the skills we already have.

Mike Siers and his wife, Stacy, got to the Outer Banks about seven years ago, just in time to see the real estate bubble burst. Stacy, with her real estate license, and Mike, with previously having a general contractor’s license, knew it would be tough, but they were committed to being here, committed to succeeding and began taking the steps necessary to realize their dream.

One of the most remarkable aspect of the Outer Banks economy has been its resilience. Even in the depths of the recent recession, as the national economy was shrinking at 5-6%, occupancy in this region shrank a barely discernible 2%. And that figure is based on occupancy tax collections, not vacancies. In fact, even in 2009, the worst year for the Outer Banks, visitation remained at historic levels, and the loss in income was a result of targeted, aggressive pricing to ensure full occupancy for homeowners.

All of us see things through our own eyes, and for the most it part serves us pretty well. That’s why we have opinions, certain beliefs . .  . all the things that go into making us unique. Which works nicely until we want to sell a product or service. Then the ability to see things through someone else’s eyes become critical. That is particularly true when renting a vacation home. 

The problem, of course, is that it is important for the homeowner to see what that renter is seeing and to understand what they want from a rental property.
